As the leaves atop Mt. Tom burnish themselves in gold and yellow hues, a gathering of New Englanders dressed in fantasy finery will eagerly await their entrance into the autumn court. The Fox and Ember Fantasy Ball is the first major fantasy ball in western Massachusetts, and leans into themes inspired by the wildly successful A Court of Thorns and Roses series by fantasy author, Sarah J. Maas.
The event is hosted by a Springfield couple who are self-professed nerds, and independent craftsmen. Michael Henderson is a U.S. Navy veteran and game designer with experience in the video games industry, and Kitty Holfield is a former pastry cook and current fantasy novel aficionado. Together, they run a small online business called “Quest and Candle” which combines a shared love of tabletop roleplaying games, and scented candle making, into themed, game-night experiences.
The Fox and Ember Fantasy Ball was born out of a desire to attend a fantasy ball a bit closer to home. In past years, you would need to drive at least as far as New York to find an event of this style, with most occurring further south of the New England area. Kitty and Michael made plans to rectify that, and hoped that the upcoming release of the next installment in the ACOTAR franchise (landing only a few days after the event itself,) would help raise awareness of the event.
This night of autumn revelry boasts actors dressed as characters inspired by the series, live performances, drink, dance, and dining, along with local authors and book signings, and hand-crafted goods by indie vendors. Tickets are $220, and include a thematic buffet with dairy-free and gluten-free options, as well as a “baddie goodie bag” for guests. The event is open to ages 21+ only.
